Every boiler manufacturer issues instructions regarding the recommended service method for their appliance. These instructions are known as the Manufacturer’s Instructions, or MIs for short.

Actual service methodology will vary slightly from one boiler to another, but the itemisation below is a fair description of what a proper, thorough boiler service should consist of. 

Having your boiler serviced correctly each year gives you 4 main areas of benefit:

Lower fuel bills

Just like a motor car, a well maintained boiler will operate more efficiently and therefore consume less fuel.

Greater reliability

Again, using the motor car comparison, a properly maintained boiler will be far less likely to let you down and cause costly, otherwise avoidable repair visits. You’ll notice on the service description above, that we mention Clean Condensate Trap and Clean Electrodes.

You’d be surprised how many repair call-outs are caused because a less thorough service engineer failed to carry out those two functions. Paying a few pounds more for a proper boiler service is obviously far more economical that risking unnecessary repair bills.

Boiler longevity

Yet again, the motor car reference. A well maintained, well treated car will have a longer useful mechanical life than a car that is the subject of neglectful maintenance. So, a further financial benefit of thorough, robust boiler servicing is that you’ll have a few more years of beneficial use before you have to replace it.

Gas safety

If your boiler is working properly, and achieving what we call Complete Combustion, then the by-product of combustion will be Carbon Dioxide. Carbon Dioxide is lighter than air and the boiler flue system can easily evacuate thos product of combustion to the outside.

If, however, the boiler is working less satisfactorily and Complete Combustion is not being achieved, then Carbon Monoxide can be the by-product. Carbon Monoxide is heavier than air, and more difficult for the boiler flue system to safely evacuate. And as we all know, Carbon Monoxide can be extremely harmful to health.
